The acid in tomatoes blunts a straight edged knife – hence the serrated edge of a tomato knife - and it is almost impossible to slice a ripe tomato with a straight bladed knife.
Tomatoes and a whole host of other food , including tarts and pies can be cut into wafer thin slices using a gentle sawing motion.
